The United Kingdom has reduced the garrison in Hong Kong during 1976 to four infantry battalions (three of them Gurkha battalions), an engineer squadron, five Naval patrol craft and an RAF helicopter squadron. Under the terms of the new cost-sharing Agreement, which came into effect on 1 April 1976 for a term of seven years in the first instance, the Hong Kong Government will pay an increased share of the cost of the garrison, rising from 50 per cent in 1976/77 to 621 per cent in 1977/78 and to 75 per cent thereafter.
