THE NEW TERRITORIES
HEUNG YEE KUK
The Heung Yee Kuk (Rural Consultative
Council) was established in 1923 and is the statutory
advisory body on New Territories matters. The Council
consists of the Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of 27 Rural
Committees (which are in turn elected by and from among
some 900 village representatives), the New Territories
Justices of the Peace, and 21 specially elected
Councillors.

on a wide range of Government policies affecting the New
Territories.

With the quickening pace of urban develop-
ment in the New Territories, the Council's attention has
been focussed on the Hong Kong Government's land resumption and compensation policy and it is shortly sending a delegation to London to make a case for more generous
terms.
