TO

POSSIBLE VISIT BY LORD GORONWY-ROBERTS

Thank you for your letter of

18th February. I too was disappointed as I had been looking forward to a chat with Lord Goronwy-Roberts I was also very sad indeed at the cause of his change of plans.

2.

I have noted the possibility

of him coming here either in August or September, or in October/November.

3.

For my part I had not intended to visit the U.K. this year until November, when I am hoping to take about 2 months off for leave and a rather longer stay in London than on recent visits. However if there is anything Lord Goronwy-Roberts would like to discuss I would gladly make a short visit to London at any time that would be convenient to him. The Dragon-boat Dinner of the Hong Kong Association in June would be a good excuse for a visit if one were thought necessary.

4.

I was not proposing to make my usual short summer visit both because we seem to be in broad agreement and other things being equal my place is here. Also because this looks like being a particularly hectic parliamentary session and I imagine that Ministers and MPs might have rather more time after the summer | recess.

5.

Incidentally I think that ideas on the budget could most usefully be developed, initially at any rate, in writing.
