Vietnamese Refugees in Hong Kong
between 1st August 1975 and 30th November 1975
On 4th May 1975 approximately 4,000 Vietnamese
refugees arrived in Hong Kong on board the M.V. CLARA MAERSK.
These were initially accommodated at 3 camps in the New
Territories: Dodwell's Ridge, Sai Kung and Sek Kong. Later
in May the refugees were segregated according to family status
into : (a) family groups, which were housed at Dodwell's Ridge
and Sai Kung; and (b) single males who were housed at Sek Kong.
Because of accommodation problems during the wet weather the
tented camp at Sek Kong was transferred to Harcourt Road Camp
on Hong Kong Island in the middle of August 1975.

By 1st August the number of refugees had been reduced
to 2,796, and these were accommodated in family groups at
Dodwell's Ridge and Sai Kung, the single males remaining at
the Harcourt Road Camp.
3.
Between 1st August 1975 and 30th November 1975 a total
of $1,715,000 (as shown at Appendix I), was spent on daily
maintenance of the Vietnamese refugees. This sum covered
food, medical services, and administration/service charges.
4.
The Social Welfare Department provided two hot rice-
based meals a day nutritionally founded on the Hong Kong
emergency diet, and in addition dry or preservable rations were
distributed weekly to supplement the diet. More suitable
food was provided for infants and young children. Extra
allowances of rice were provided for adult males and for all
refugees at the onset of the cooler winter months.
