you raised presented us with a number of difficulties.

2. We considered whether a boundary disclaimer note was necessary at all on your maps and charts. It seemed paradoxical to print a disclaimer on a map which we would for most practical purposes regard as authoritative. On the other hand, we consider that it is necessary to make it clear that DMS maps may not be quoted as evidence of HG's point of view in any legal or political dispute about boundaries or sovereignty. Moreover, since you have hither- to printed a disclaimer on your maps, the mere fact of its disappearance might lead to misunderstanding about our reasons for dropping it.

༣. We have, therefore, made another attempt to formulate a disclaimer which makes our essential points and meets the American objections outlined in paragraph 4 of your letter of 23 March. We propose the following:

"D.Mil.Svy maps are not to be taken as necessarily

representing the view of the UK Government on boundaries or political status".

This note would dispose of objections (a), (c) and (d) of paragraph 4 of your letter under reference. So far as (b) is concerned, it is our intention that this disclaimer could be used without exception on all maps including those showing UK territory. Should the Americans print maps for which you have provided the material, it could be used on those also.

Frovided you see no other objections to this disclaimer, we suggest that you ask your Liaison Officer in washington to see whether the Americans find it acceptable.
