many illegal activities
connected with arms drugs, and
jade are carried on quite openly in Tachilek(north of
Chiang Rai province) with the connivance of Burmese officials.
5. The FCO telegram mentioned an allegation by Cowell that
Burmese intelligence had ordered the assassination of
his film crew. I believe such an order could have been
given. It would not be surprising in the context of the golden triangle. It is interesting to note in this connection that the Burmese Consul-General, a military intelligence
officer, spends a good deal of his time in fear of being
nesaseinated and rarely travels outside Chiang Mai. Indeed,
he rarely leaves his house. There have been assassinations
in Chiang Mai, some alleged to have been carried out by
Burmese intelligence. The Consul-General may be right
to fear what could be a dose of his own medicine in reutrn.
