by several men while walking along Bute Street.

They rushed at him from a side lane and pushed him to the ground. LUI said that, thinking that he was being robbed, he resisted and was stabbed in his thigh. The men then ran away and LUI also ran away because he thought that other robbers might be nearby. He ran to the lorry in Reclamation Street and hid there until the Police arrived, when he asked to be sent to hospital. LUI said that about $10 had been stolen from him.

A damaged wristwatch was found near the rear door of the James Bond Restaurant. When interviewed by the police officer, LUI denied that he owned a wristwatch at all, but in addition to the thigh wound he had suffered abrasions to his wrist, which could have been caused by a watch being torn from his wrist during a struggle.

Bloodstains of the same group as the deceased's, were also found on both LUI's hands and on one foot.

MEDICAL EVIDENCE.

The deceased died from a single stab wound to the right middle of the chest which cut into the heart. The pathologist was of the

opinion that the wound was consistent with the use of a weapon like the knife found on the fruit

stall.

DEFENCE.

LUI gave evidence. He said that he was a pak pai driver who worked during the night. On the morning in question, he had met the owner of the car at a petrol station in Bute Street to return it to him and, having done so, set off for a nearby tea-house. He reiterated the story that he gave when interviewed by a police officer at the hospital to the effect that he was attacked by some men in Bute Street, but from then on his evidence diverged from the answers he gave to the police officer's questions. His evidence was that the men pushed him along Bute Street into the service lane where he was robbed. He managed to get away from them and ran along the service lane. As he did so, another group of men rushed out of a door leading on to the lane. The men in this group ran in both directions
