BRITISH MILITARY ASSISTANCE FOR US FORCES

1. Requests by the Americans for the activation of provisions in various Anglo-UB defence co-operation arrangements concerning British bases in the United Kingdom and elsewhere (eg fuel supplies at Singapore and Hong Kong; use of Masirah, Diego Garcia etc) have pointed to the need to have a comprehensive list of all such arrange- ments readily available.

2. We have a list in North America Department of all published agreements and of unpublished agreements about the use of facilities in the United Kingdom but it appears that neither the MOD or Defence Department have any central register with copies of all the unpublished arrangements.

3. A list of published UK/US agreements covering defence co-opera- tion is attached together with details of arrangements covered by unpublished arrangements (separately to each department). I would be grateful if departments could consider whether they are aware of any other arrangements not already covered by these two lists (either government-to-government or service-to-service) which we might add to our records in North America Department.
