continue, within the Ministry of Defence, with studies of
further joint training opportunities and methods and with a
study of the impact of Defence Review decisions on training
needs.
Adventurous Training
23. The tri-Service Adventurous Training programme instituted in
1971 has now become well established. It provides means by which
Servicemen can be faced with tests of courage, endurance and character
of a kind not otherwise readily available in peacetime.
European Collaboration
24. The matter of training collaboration with our European partners
will be actively pursued in the Eurogroup. All Services are seeking
to identify projects for collaboration from the introduction of the
new training methods and new equipment, both on a joint and single
Service basis. Joint training of forward air controllers is already
being successfully undertaken in conjunction with the Federal Republic
of Germany (FRG) and discussions, again with the FRG, are well
advanced for the training of personnel to operate and maintain the
Lance missile.
COMMONWEALTH AND FOREIGN TRAINING
25. Last year over 6,000 officers and men from overseas attended
training courses in the United Kingdom. The Services continued to
provide personnel to other countries to help with local training.
