Secretary of State's visit to the Far East
The Secretary of State has now thought further about the programme for his visit to China and Japan and the problems of the Japanese Spring Holiday and Chinese May Day celebrations, outlined in your submission of 25 June.
The Secretary of State would rather not spend 1 May in China. He suggests that to avoid this he should perhaps adopt the solution in paragraph 7 of your submission by which he would leave Britain a little later and go first to Japan. He could then spend a day or two in Hong Kong around 1 May before going on to China thereafter. This would mean I presume that the Secretary of State would have his official discussions in Tokyo before the start of "golden week" and would go on to Kyoto for sight-seeing on e.g. 29 April.
I should be grateful if you would explore these possibilities with the countries concerned.
