2. The Defence and External Affairs Sub-Committee of the Expenditure Committee of the House of Commons consists of
nine MP - five Labour and four Conservative. The Chairman' is Sir Harwood Harrison (Conservetive). Some or all of thei members, accompanied by a Clerk and an OD Liaison Officer will be visiting Hong Kong from 18 to 22 November, returning by way of Cyprus. The Group may also stop off at Tehran ou route to Cyprus but this has not yet been decided.
3. This will be the first time that the Committee has visited Hong Kong. They originally planned to visit Dicro Garcia, Gan and Masirah as well but have been dissuaded fra
doing so. In the last two years they have made visits to Germany (twice) the United States and Gibraltar.
h. The Sub-Committee have said that they would like to be
briefed and to make visits as appropriate while in Hong ko i
on the following:-
(a)
(b)
External defence; re-organisation of the
Army; use of air and naval support for defence; training in Hong Kong.
Internal security; liaison with the Folice;
Army relations with the Chinese population.
(c) Viability and economics of the Gurkha brigade.
