1. Mr Dinwiddy (HKIOD) telephoned about briefing for DEASC for their visit to Hong Kong and asked about the latest state of play.
2. We discussed Mr Jackson's minute of 8 September at (101) below. It would seem that there is nothing MOD wish to brief the DEASC about in London before departure. We agreed, therefore, that we will concentrate on those subjects listed in our telegram No 506 of 26 June to Hong Kong - but we will probably ask MOD to contribute to FCO briefing on (G)
"Use of Hong Kong by US Navy etc" - rather than the other way around, as the telegram implies. Mr Dinwiddy will consider, in HKIOD, whether they will wish to involve the Department of Trade in briefing on (J); he thinks they probably will do so, and also Mr Dart of the Economists' Department, who is an expert on Hong Kong's trade affairs.
3. We agreed that HKIOD will coordinate the content of the briefing, which will be informal and oral. We agreed that PCCU will discuss with the Committee Clerk when the House reassembles in October (13/10) a suitable date perhaps suggesting sometime during the week beginning 10 November so that the bricfing will be not too much in advance of the visit.
