Very many thanks for all
you and your Department did for me last week. I found the talks with Lord Goronwy Roberts and David Ennals extremely valuable, and I am most grateful for all you did in preparation for my visit.
In the end the Fashion Show
at Hong Kong House passed off well. In accordance with your Department's advice it was in a fairly low key and I do not think it attracted much publicity. On the other hand it did attract two-thirds of the buying power of the retail trade in the UK, for which I give full marks to the TDC.
I now expect to be here until November or December". I think it would be extremely worthwhile if you could come out for a working fortnight here some time in the summer. If you could meanwhile spare Timms for a similar period I am sure it would be valuable. He has of course had Hong Kong experience but it is all a bit out of date and is not related to the sort of problems he has to deal with now. If there is any difficulty about the FCO paying for his ticket I am sure the Hong Kong Government could be persuaded to do so. I mention this with some diffidence, just in case.
Then I will the sm
