Public Information Branch

Films on GLC activities and on Refuse Disposal could not be shown owing to a strike of GLC electricians. It was agreed that copies would be made available for showing in Hong Kong for information and as a guide to our own film-making

programme.

The GLC produced the following sessions at short notice :

(i) Refuse (Mr. Dick Anstis)

Overall refuse disposal is 12000 tons per day. The individual London Boroughs are responsible for refuse collections which are made through 47 Refuse Reception Depots for disposal by the GLC. The principal distri- bution point is the River Thames Refuse Transfer Station at Cringle Dock, which handles nearly 1/4 of the 22m tons of London refuse per year. Refuse is pulverized prior to loading on barges by elevated conveyor belts. Movement is by barge to landfill sites in the Essex marshes where the refuse is used for reclamation purposes.

Another main disposal point is the Edmonton Incineration Plant which handles 1800 tons of crude refuse each day, extracts clinkered ash and metals, and generates 30 MW electricity,

Note:

Incineration has now given way to Recycling and Reclamation as refuse disposal means. Experi- mentation in Composting has proved unsuitable for London refuse.

(Publications on Cringle Dock and Edmonton Incinerator

are available, and study is recommended of the "Report on Solid Wastes Management Service, 1965-1975".)

Full detail is given in the organisation chart and Information Sheets passed to our Public Information Branch for study and comment.

Once again the Slide Project programme could not be produced owing to the electricians strike.

(i) Arts & Recreation

(Miss Tudge)

The GLC is a major patron of the arts in London and provides facilities for 500 performances per year in the Royal Festival Hall, 400 in Queen Elizabeth Hall and 300 in the Purcell Room, all situated on the River Thames South Bank.
