school for 365 boys at Woolverstone Hall near Ipswich. Tuition is free, but parents
contribute to boarding costs according to their means.
Technical Education (see Universities)
Special Education
Where possible, pupils with disabilities are educated in ordinary
schools. Those whose handicaps are so severe as to require separate special
educational treatment are placed in day or boarding schools or special classes
maintained by the Inner London Education Authority or in independent schools.
Provision is made in this way for blind, partially sighted, deaf, physically handi-
capped, delicate, maladjusted, autistic and educationally subnormal children,
including the severely subnormal. Children with partial hearing attend special
units within the normal school.
Adult Education
Daytime and evening classes are offered at adult education and
literary institutes. Classes and activities are held in an informal atmosphere and
provide wide opportunities to occupy leisure time usefully and enjoyably. Subjects
include arts and crafts, physical activities, music, drama, literature, modern
languages and current affairs.
Teacher Education
About 5,000 Londoners are student teachers taking courses at colleges
of education in the United Kingdom. For full-time teacher training the Inner London
Education Authority, maintains nine colleges of education one of which is a day college
for mature students, with a total roll of 7,271. Part-time courses leading to qualified
