Inadequate public transport system or excess of private vehicles

In Hong Kong, private cars account for two-thirds of all motor

vehicle registrations growing at 14% annually. The absence of the

minibuses from the roads eased congestion markedly and thereby,

in effect, added sufficient capacity to the bus and tram fleet to

enable it to carry 25 per cent more passengers without seriously

increasing passenger waiting times. Public transport is becoming

progressively less efficient and consequently less attractive.

Problems in London water-borne transport:

Some of the more important piers from which passenger

services operate are old and need extensive repairs.

West-minster Pier which is the hub of the passenger services

is over 100 years old and needs to be replaced with a more

suitable structure.

(iii) The piers need to be modernised to make them more attractive

to potential passengers particularly in bad weather.

(iv) The development of river commuter services is restricted

by the fact that there is no suitable landing place further

downstream than Greenwich.

The passenger services are operated by a number of companies

whose activities as whole would benefit from a greater degree

of co-ordination to provide better standards of service.

(vi) Many of the passenger craft now operating are old or are of

a type which is unattractive to passengers in poor weather.
