Corruption
Question: While you are here, Sir, there has been a lot of publicity
about yet another corruption case involving the Police
Minister:
Question:
Force here in ilong kong. Do you have any personal comment
to make or opinion?
My personal opinion can be expressed very briefly and very
pungently as no doubt yours would be.
Like all of you,
I deeply deplore that there should be occasions for this
kind of publicity for Hong Kong. Like all of you I am very
glad indeed that your Government is facing up to it, with
an Independent Commission which, I think, means business.
I have met members of the Commission, I have been impressed
by their determination to do a very good clean job. However,
I hope that comment will not be so over sensationalised as
to cast a cloud for too long a time over the very real
achievements and the very fine characteristics of life in
this community. It is absolutely essential that this curse
be lifted from the brow of this hard-working community. I
believe it will. One heartening factor is the co-operation
from among the general public, which I am assured by those
in charge of the Commission, is freely forthcoming. Let
that continue. The Media of course has a very important
part to play here, and I am glad to see how very well they
are already playing their part.
