MANIFESTATIONS IN HONG KONG DURING 1975
1.
It
The only event for Hong Kong that the department is aware of is a proposal to stage a Science, Education & Technology Exhibition in the autumn of next year. The idea has been prompted by the Hong Kong Government' 8 known concern that the Colony's industries are becoming increasingly uncompetitive and is therefore encouraging them to diversify and become more capital-intensive. is believed that this trend should give Britain an opportunity to put on display her technology over a wide range of systems and products. The project is still, however, in the exploratory stage and DOT have in fact only recently circularised the branches of industry most closely affected in order to ascertain whether the proposal would command sufficient support in this country to make it practicable. If the Exhibition comes off, the intention would be to hold it in November. Though there is no secrecy regarding the proposal, you may think that the plans are as yet too uncertain to make it worth mentioning to Mr Wilson.

In his letter to Mr Male, Mr Wilson also refers to the forthcoming Royal Visit to Japan. Mr Male will no doubt wish to bear in mind that the Queen will also be visiting Hong Kong on the same journey.

Mr Male may also wish to know that Mr Peter Shore has been invited to write a short introduction for the same issue of the Far Eastern Economic Review to which Mr Wislon has been asked to contribute. We were in fact under the impression that this was to have appeared already, on 15 September, but as in the event the special issue of the publication did not appear on that date, we can only assume that publication has been postponed until a later date.
