5. Much has been written about political prisoners and the state of prisons in South Vietnam as information is more readily available than it is in relation to the North. The little information that exists about prisoners held by the Communists, comes mostly from American former prisoners of war. Such accounts as theirs of the conditions of captivity and the tortures inflicted suggest that prisoners in North Vietnamese or PRG prisons receive harsh treatment, but we have no direct evidence of this.
