ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO HONG KONG.

1. Just as the bag closes, I am writing to let you know that the Government spokesman yesterday announced that the 118 Vietnamese of Chinese extraction have been transfered to Con Son Island. I attach a copy of the actual statement.

2. This may attract unfavourable press comment, since Con Son is the island where the infamous "tiger cages" were to be found and has always subsequently had a bad reputation.

You will recall that the last Ambassador visited Con Son before he left and a full report was sent to Bill Squire on 8 January.
