來函檔號 Your Ref.:
11th June, 1974.
Thank you for your letter POL/72 1115/40/5
of the 4th June about the filling of the post of Director
of Criminal Investigation in the Royal Hong Kong Police
Force. We are indeed grateful for the consideration
you have given to this matter, when you have so many ineluctable problems pressing upon you.
2.
By the time this letter arrives, Andrew Stuart (Head of the Hong Kong & Indian Ocean Department in the F.C.0.) will probably have been in touch to let you know that we welcome the suggestion that Chief Supt. Howell, promoted as a Commander, might be acceptable for the appointment; and that a Board consisting of Mr. S.T. Kidd
the Hong Kong Commissioner, London), Mr. M.J. Macoun the Inspector General of Colonial Police) and Mr. Stuart himself is being requested to interview Chief Supt. Howell.
3.
My request for a somewhat wider search therefore stands adjourned, and if Howell interviews satisfactorily, it would of course lapse.
