Dear Mr. Barnett,
I feel that we ought to draw your attention to an article in your September 20th edition, under the "Diary" headline, about an advertisement recruiting young officers to the Royal Hong Kong Police.
Our objections to this item are firstly, that the tone and intention of the article are in poor taste and a cheap jibe at a Force which has for its size and for the environment in which it works, a rather lower proportion of black sheep than many others. We appreciate that however much one may resent expressions
of a journalist's views, he has a right, within legal limits, to make them. Our second complaint is therefore more serious. To justify his right to express hurtful views, there is a total responsibility on the journalist to get his facts right. There are three fundamentally wrong facts here, and they could all have been verified.
(i) The advertisement was not placed by Leo
(ii)
Burnett, either here or in Singapore. Leo Burnett do not handle the account. We do.
The "Chief Constable" of the Royal Ilong Kong Police, either last or current has never been charged with corruption. The rank of "Chief Constable" does not exist. The Force is headed by a Commissioner of
Police.
(iii) The man probably referred to was a Chief
Superintendant by no means the most senior post in this Force, and who, as far as we know, is in custody awaiting extradition procedings which will commence early in October.
