"Crime, Pays at Burnetts"

You may have been wondering who it was who had the

nerve to do it. To sell the Hong Kong Police Force to

recruits, under the heading: "Crime. The one career you

probably never considered".

We phoned up Leo Burnett to find the man who had

the force of personality, the raw guts, to push out an

ad that touched on the taboo subject of police corruption,

in a force whose last Chief Constable is reported to be

still evading Interpol on corruption charges.

"Are we the people who handled those nice ads?"

asked the executive at Leo Burnett. "We thought so, we

said, aren't you?"

It turns out that it is Leo Burnett in Singapore

who placed the ads. Do they know of the Hong Kong Police

image in this country? "We will phone them and find out,

said the London agency.

Hopefully, they won't ring us back. It would be

too sad if it turned out that the agency just hadn't been

briefed on the corruption "image" problem after all.
