ribs, the second to seventh on the right and the second to the ninth on the left were fractured and the left and right ninch and tenth ribs at his back were also fractured.
The fracture
He died
of the ribs at his back caused injuries to his lungs. from asphyxiation caused by the inhalation of vomit, but the evidence was that he would have died fairly quickly from the injuries which he sustained.

SUMMARY.
There was no evidence as to which of the people involved (whether the accused or others) caused any particular injury. There was, however, evidence implicating all the accused in the attack on the deceased, and CHAU and LIU admitted attacking him in statements to the Police and in evidence at their trial. LAI denied striking the deceased at all because, he said, he had injured his hand earlier when aiming a blow at YEUNG. WAN admitted striking the deceased on the ankle in a statement to the Police. She did not give evidence at the trial. None of the accused admits to striking any serious blow.

(a)
SALIENT FACTORS.
It is impossible to say which injuries were caused by which persons but all accused joined in a purposeful, vicious and sustained attack on CHAN Kwok Cheung, causing many injuries. No sharp or pointed weapons were used, but the major injuries appear to have been caused by kicks or by weapons such as the broken chair leg and dumb-bells which were in evidence.
(b) It is unlikely that there was any intention to kill the
deceased, but without doubt there was a common intention to cause him grievous bodily harm. The attack was premeditated but not the killing.
(c) The female accused, WAN Mui-mui, procured and directed
the attacks on both YEUNG and the deceased. All her co-accused worked for her in some capacity and it is probably fair to say were under her dominant influence.
RECOMMENDATION.
If His Excellency decides that the death sentences should be commuted, I recommend that a sentence of 20 years'
