Militia men and women are all working people, most
of them farmers. They normally wear no distinctive uniform
or insignia and as a rule the only active elements are
the Backbone (including Armed) Militia whose peacetime
duties are as follows :

the maintenance of law and order
in their area including co-
operation with and assistance
to the Law and Order Protection
Section and Police when required.
the strengthening of security
measures against sabotage and
infiltration by enemy agents,
including reinforcing the P.L.A.
or Police in providing guards at
vital points such as government
granaries and State owned enter-
prises.
(c) the suppression and control of the
'Five Bad Elements.
