Fung Fee-foong, Catherine wanted to study music. In 1951 Hong Kong had no facilities for further studies in music. She, thorefore, went to Peking and entered the Peking Normal University and took courses that would further her musical ambition. She was sent later to the Conservatoire at Shanghai to major in piano.
Yes, she did study under a Communist regime. But that does not mean she has communist ideas which she will opread at St. Catharine's. In fact, she was not allowed to finish her three year course in Shanghai, because her independent mind was unacceptable to the Communist hierarchy. In 1963 Madam Fung was refused permission to leave China and it was only in 1973 that she managed to return to Hong Kong, the place of her birth.
Unfortunately she was too late to see her sick father, 12. Fung Yui Shin, a government School Principal in Taipo and later Principal of Wong Shiu Chi Middle School in Taipo. He was a Justice of the Peace for many years until his death. Bishop Baker would like me to montion that her father was well-imoun to leading Chiness members of the Church. Both her parents were baptised Christians before they died; and Hadan Fung has returned to join the faith of her parents. She could no longer suffer the heartaches and hypocrisy of teaching contrary to what she had learnt as a student at St. Stephen's Girls' College. low can anyone finally deny faith in love and forgiveness, since within her heart has grown and developed the love of God.
Madan Mung has taught now in St. Catharine's since 1st February 1974 as I never dreamt a permit would be refused for such a gentle person and effective teacher. She has good methods and is up-to-date in her knowledge of teaching English techniques, drawing my attention to a series of books published by acmillan in Canada. In fact, this series had already been recommended to me by Professor Bertha Benson,
There can rocently Professor of English at the Chinese University.
be no doubt about her ability as a teacher or her fine qualities as a person.
