WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT

4. a) Water supply. Flans are now being considered

to put the water supply on a more regular basis.

b) Drainage. Pumphouses are being installed and the

open ditches have since last year been cleared

twice daily. Flans are being considered to repair

the main drainage.

c) Sanitation.

The Urbon Services Department has a

large team of sweepers who operate in the City.

Several huge refuse bins and standpipes for street

cleaning have been installed. The Urban Services

Department carry out investigation of infectious

diseases, pest control, the daily chlorination of

wells and the maintenance of public latrines.

d) Electricity.

Plans are being drawn up to sort out

and improve the inadequate and hazardous electricity

situation.

e) Fire risks. Fire risk, because of the maze-like

layout of the Walled City, is high. In 1973 the

Hong Kong Government started to clear the sensitive

areas on the fringe of the Walled City.

Legislation regarding the storing of dangerous

goods is also enforced.
