I have accepted an invitation from Michael Herries to speak at the Hong Kong Association dinner on 24th. June. I propose to combine this with a few days in the Office, if this commends itself to you,
from say,
17th. to 20th. June inclusive, Then snatch a quick weekend in Scotland and return in time to speak on 24th. and then leave for Hong Kong the following day.
My effective absence from Hong Kong
would be from June 15th. to 26th.
I will be taking leave in August, but it is not a good time to see anyone in Whitehall, Westminster or the City, and I had been thinking in any case of a quick visit in May. However, this invitation is a good peg on which to hang a visit without causing speculation here and it would be nice to see you all and hear what you have to say at the same time.
In my absence Denys Roberts would act as Governor, and Haddon-Cave as Colonial Secretary. The latter arrangement is right under the McKinsey scheme of things, but in any case, Mike Clinton would be on leave.
Perhaps in due course you could let me know whether these arrangements commend themselves to the Office.
