REF.

Many thanks for your letter of 31st. January about my proposed visit to London in June (HKK 3/548/9).

I hope you or Duncan Watson will let me know if you think this plan should be altered in view of the change of Government. My concern is only to come back twice.

If you saw advantage in my meeting the new Ministers earlier than June I would of course pay a special visit. But in this case I would arrange to take my leave in July following the Hong Kong Association Dinner towards the end of June. Fortunately, other peoples arrangements here make it possible to switch at short notice.

Insofar as my own previous experience is relevant, I think it is rather a nuisance for new Ministers to be confronted with ambassadors or governors in their first month or two and especially if their parishes are peripheral when viewed in Parliamentary terms, unless some really urgent issue arises. I hope somehow to be able to spare you the urgent issues, and in this case June would seem to be about the right timing.

Thank you for your kind offer to arrange my programme. I will be getting in touch in about a month's time.
