VISIT TO JAPAN

The Secretary of State has seen your submission dated 24 June summarising the result of your recent visit to Japan. commented:-

"A very good report. The TV agreement is very satisfactory but I am disturbed by the Japanese trade surplus objectives."

I do not think the Secretary of State wishes further comment on this unless you have anything to add to what you said in your report.

The Secretary of State has also taken on board your recommendation in paragraph 11 that your visit be reinforced by a Ministerial presence next year. All other things being equal, he would like CRE2 to plan on the basis of him paying a visit to Japar during the Easter Recess and possibly taking in suitable visits to Malaya, Singapore and Hong Kong at the same time.
