places has been declared to be an Addiction Treatment Centre under the provisions of the Drug Addicts Treatment and Rehabilitation Ordinance, Cap 326, though both are registered as nursing homes under the Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Maternity Homes Registration Ordinance, Cap 165.

18.

Originally clients were kept in this drug free accommodation for two months. In 1969 the period was extended to three months, with the object of further strengthening a client's motivation to resist relapse following release. The Society also offers an after care follow up service for three years.

19.

Up to 31st March 1973, 661 men had been admitted for treatment and 257 women, but considerable numbers of them did not complete the programme. The success rate in terms of total abstinence is difficult to determine, but the evidence suggests that it is not more than 10% taken overall. The reason for this is probably that the majority of those seeking treatment are hardened addicts of long standing who have little motivation to resist continued drug abuse upon release when not in a drug free atmosphere. (By 1972/73 91% of the Society's clients were addicts).

20.

The Society will close its Tsz Wan Shan and Kwun Tong Hostels for drug treatment later this year and move both of them to new accommodation in a resettlement estate in Yuen Long, increasing the accommodation for male clients to 24. The Society is also making preliminary plans for a multi-purpose centre at Shek Kip Mei which will include accommodation for the treatment of drug addict clients.

Other Treatment Centres.

21.

There are two very small voluntary drug treatment schemes in addition to those of SARDA and DPAS The Haven of Hope Tuberculosis Sanitorium at Rennies Mill, run by a Norwegian Missionary Society
