It is not easy to estimate with any great accuracy the success rate achieved by SARDA in terms of permanent abstinence, but such evidence as there is would suggest that it is not more than 25%.

The Ling Oi Youth Centre operated by the Finnish Missionary Society was opened in June 1970 and operates as a half-way house largely for youth discharged
from Shek Kwu Chau. It has accommodation for 14. SARD A
opened the Sun Tak Hostel in Wanchai in May 1970, for treated women addicts. It has 4 beds and is financed by a grant from the Community Chest. There is also a SARDA Alumni Association whose membership consists of former inmates who have completed a course of treatment and who continue to remain abstinent. It receives a grant from the Community Chest to meet current expenses. And finally there is the Pui Sun Centre operated and financed
by the Lutheran World Federation whose membership is about
80% drawn from ex-clients of SARDA. These last two are in
the nature of clubs whose object is to encourage cured addicts to remain abstinent by the promotion of healthy
cultural and social activities.

For many years DPAS has been concerned about
the problem of drug addiction amongst those seeking
assistance from it: around 1963 some 85% of its clients
had relapsed into drug abuse after release from prison. As a result of this, and following the deliberations of
a Narcotics Seminar and a Medical Working Party under Professor A.J.M. McFadzean which considered the problem,
the Society came to the conclusion that it must offer
treatment and rehabilitation facilities to those who
wished to volunteer to receive them. It thus began the treatment of drug addict clients in April 1965 in a flat
in Tsz Wan Shan donated by the Rotary Club of Kowloon West
with accommodation for 12 men. In 1967 the scheme was
extended to females, using the Society's Kwun Tong Hostel which has accommodation for 10 women. Neither of these
