31, I think that we need not be in a desperate hurry to set this group up, since there is in my view, no especial urgency for it and there seems merit in not having it too obviously active before the Ad Hoc Committee has done its study tour (which is proposed for the autumn). However, after we have acquired substantial good will with the Americans by being prepared to meet in Hong Kong, we should not dissipate it unnecessarily by appearing to drag our feet, Accordingly letting the Americans know in due course that we are proposing to station a Hong kong official in Bangkok might do much to keep them happy.

OTHER BUSINESS

33. On the Saturday morning r Jordan and I (Mr Huntley having returned on Friday) met Rolph to discuss the results of the meeting. We agreed the general content and line which he should adopt in his report which he will be circulating as soon as possible.

31.

On Saturday afternoon Mr Jordan and I had a helicopter trip around the colony, which was very useful in enabling me to get an insight into the problems of law enforcement presented by traffic into and out of the Colony.
