man wants killers to hang

A newly appointed Urban Councillor yesterday advocated petitioning the Queen to sustain death sentences passed on convicted killers.

The Councillor, Mr Wong Shiu-cheuck. said that the Queen would decide on the issue in the interest of the great majority as long as she was kept fully informed of public opinion.

Mr Wong, who is actively involved in several community projects, revealed that the majority of the people who had approached him had expressed strong support for the recent Government decision not to reprieve a convicted murderer.

"What's more. they have urged that the carrying out of capital punishment and tougher penalties should form part and parcel of the current Anti- Crime Campaign.” he said.

Mr Wong called for a mass signature campaign, to known

as the Million Signatures Campaign.”

"The idea is to give every one a chance to state his view on this important issue."

He disclosed plans to form a committee comprising community organisations to send out questionnaires to the public.

"When we have sufficient indication of public opinion we would petition the authorities to uphold decisions not to reprieve convicted murderers.

"If necessary, we will also petition the Queen,” he said.
