10. The 1972 quota for the restricted countries, including at that time the Mediterranean Associates, was 12 700 tonnes and recorded imports were 9 938 tonnes (8 765 + 1 173). Take up of the quota has varied between 80% and 100% in the last four years. The cotton yarn quotas have had a more direct and practical effect in limiting imports than have the fabric/made-up goods quotas.
CHANGES IN THE UK COTTON YARN QUOTA SYSTEM
11. The UK cotton yarn quota system was little changed in the period 1966-72 but since then a number of liberalisation measures have been taken or decided upon:

From 1 April 1973 UK imports of cotton yarn from the 9 Mediterranean Associates of the EEC (Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey) have been liberalised. The effect has yet to be reflected in the UK import statistics, but the experience of the Six may provide a parallel. Imports of cotton yarn to the Six from the Mediterranean Nine rose from 15 658 tonnes in 1968 (20% of total imports) to 41 418 in 1971 and 52 724 (32% of total imports) in 1972, suggesting that the momentum derived from reducing duties and freedom from quotas will carry the total still higher in normal
