4. This circular sets out the procedures we

recommend for the purpose.

(a) The main responsibility for ensuring

that posts who need information on

European Community matters get it

lies with EID (External), (and to a

lesser extent EID (Internal)), in the

FCO and with UKREP EEC Brussels. They will ensure so far as possible that

telegrams, letters and documents are

repeated to posts for information

when necessary. Posts should let

EID (External) know when they foresee

a need to follow some subject under

current discussion.

(b) Geographical departments also have a

watching brief to keep an eye on the

interests of the countries for which

they are responsible. If they think

that the interests of posts in their

area are being rejected, they will

arrange with EID (External) for addi-

tional information to be sent.

(c) Posts should not hesitate, on the

basis of press reports, to ask for

briefing by telegram or letter, as

required, on developments as they take

place.

In addition to copies of official letters and

telegrams there are the following types of material

which may be of use to posts:
