local citizenship in the territories in which they
now reside;
that the question is now under study by officials
whether BPP status should be withdrawn from the
subjects of the Sultan of Brunei who already possess
Brunei citizenship. The Prime Minister, on 25 July,
was in favour of this if it could be done;
that all other BPPs would be able to reacquire that
status on a personal basis if they had no possibility
of acquiring another nationality or foreign travel
documents.
6. Ministers also decided that it would be desirable to
deprive citizens of the UK and Colonies (see paragraph 5 iii.
above) who are dual nationals of their UK and Colonies nationality.
Examples are the Anglo-Argentine community in Argentina and the
"Queen's Chinese" in Penang and Malacca.
7.
Officials have been directed to consider further whether
some revision of current UK policy on dual nationals is
desirable, eg whether an alien on naturalisation as a UK
citizen should be required to renounce his former nationality
and so completely throw in his lot with this country. This is
under study. Further work is also being done on the question
of putting the enjoyment of civic privileges by Commonwealth
citizens in the UK on a reciprocal basis, ie if their country
of origin gives us substantial reciprocity, they will be allowed
eg to vote here, but if Englishmen cannot vote in their country
of origin, they will not be able to do so here.
