Press cuttings on the relaxed border restrictions
Through the assistance of the UMELCO, the village leaders of Shataukok have succeeded in urging Government to relax border restrictions.
According to Mr. LAU Yam-man, chairman of Shataukok Rural Committee, the border restrictions have kept tourists from going to Shataukok and thus affecting the economy of the district.

The relaxed restrictions include :-
The 20,000 Shataukok residents can renew their special border zone permits every three years instead of every three months.
Merchants who are in business contact with resident there can apply for permits which are valid for one year, which allow them free movement and to stay for one night in Shataukok.
(3) Visiting relatives of residents in Shataukok are
allowed to stay for one night there.
(4) Those who apply for special border zone permits will
no longer be required to take finger-prints or to go through security check.
(5) If circumstances allow, the validity of vehicle permits
will be extended to be the same as that of the special border zone permits of the drivers.
(6) The border police station will consider issuing
temporary permits to children under 16 who are required to go to the border on compassionate ground.
However, village leaders are not fully satisfied with the relaxed restrictions. They hope Government will lift all the restrictions or to reduce the extent of the restricted area.
It was disclosed by the chairman and a committee member of the Shataukok Rural Committee that Government has promised to build a housing estate and a clinic there and to provide Shataukok with recreational facilities, street lights and pavements etc.
