The DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT, under a Secretary of State who has final responsibility for all its operations, undertakes the whole range of departmental functions which affect the physical environment, in England, in which people live and work. He is assisted by (a) the Minister for Housing and Construction, responsible (among other things) for housing programmes and finance; building regulations; new towns; government accommodation; and finance; building regulations; new towns; government accommodation; and for royal parks and palaces and ancient monuments; (b) the Minister for Transport Industries, responsible for ports; general policy on nationalised industries; railways; road haulage; buses; other aspects of transport; and also for sport; and (c) the Minister for Local Government and Development, responsible for local government; regional, land use and transport planning; the countr side and conservation; water; sewerage; and refuse disposal. The department also co-ordinates work on the prevention of environmental pollution.
