In return for the Secretary of State's visit to China in November 1972. Originally planned as part of a tour of fifteen countries, which is now likely to be curtailed by the Vietnam Conference. The visit to London is proceeding as planned.

Latter half During his visit to Japan from 16-19 September the Frime Confidential of 1973 Minister invited the Japanese Foreign Minister to London this year for the next round of Anglo-Japanese minister- ial consultations. No dates have yet been agreed. Much will depend on whether or not Mr Tanaka comes.

The Frime Minister also invited Mr Tanaka to visit the United Kingdom some time this year. The invitation was accepted. No 10 have suggested the first week in October but this has not yet been put to the Japanese.

Mr Rippon has said that he would welcome a visit by Mr Miki in late June or early July. The Ambassador in Tokyo will shortly be conveying this invitation to the Deputy Frime Minister.

The Ambassdor in Tokyo has recommended that Mr Nakasone should be invited to the United Kingdom some time this year. We await a reply to this proposal from the DTI, to whom we have suggested that any invitation should be open-ended.
