Stephen Wong of Tai Po, NG Tsan-lam and WAI Hon-leung, Chairman and Vice-Chairmen respectively of Sha Tin Rural Committee accompanied Mr. Parry during most of the visits.

I have invited him to attend a monthly meeting with the Executive Committee of the Kuk on 18th September, 1973 during which the system of land exchange with Letters 'B' was discussed. The closure order served on the dangerous village houses in Tseng Lan Shue was also one of the items on the agenda. He also attended, a few days later, an Executive Committee Meeting of the Kuk. I myself also have had two sessions with him.

The fact that he was the first British ̧M. P. to be involved in N.T. issues gave some of our Rural Committee Chairmen a big fillip. CHAN Yat-san considers that his idea of bringing more British M.Ps. out here will be a force to be reckoned with by Government as far as he is concerned.

Mr. Parry apparently was very interested in the N.T. and he considered that the complaints by the Kuk over land issues were reasonable. In his view the N.T. villagers were good-natured common people who might not be able to understand Government policies and as such their problems should be given sympathetic consideration. CHIAN Yat-san seems to have explored a new avenue in capitalis- ing his political gain. It is probable that some questions concerning the N.T. will be asked in Parliament by Mr. Parry. I should be grateful if you would keep in view further de- velopment at your end and keep me posted.

My own impression of him was that he was not a vindictive man. If he had his head filled with stories of government outrage he did not pass on any of this to me. I talked about land compensation, Letter B, and a great many other subjects he was interested in but he did not tackle me on issues that must have been raised with him. He said he gave CHAN Yat-san a flea in his car when he threatened to go to Peking. He well appreciates many of his contacts are well off landlords. I would not be surprised if they did not overdo their attentions to him. The only matter he really thought we should do something about was beggars taking their children onto the streets late at night in Tsim Sha Tsui and I put him onto Ken Topley.
