When we spoke on the telephone on 16 August about your visit to the Far East, I mentioned that we had now heard from Sir John Addis in Peking and from Mr Colvin in Ulan Bator. Sir John Addis has replied that he would be very glad if you and Mrs Rees would stay with him while you are in Peking. Mr Colvin would be very glad to put you and Mrs Rees up in the Embassy in Ulan Bator from 16 September until 22 September, but he much regrets that he would not be able to accommodate you for a further two days until 24 September. He has not yet consulted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about your proposed tour to the Altai or about your request to call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, but will do so as soon as he learns that you have been granted visas to enter Mongolia. I should mention in this connection that I have now heard from the Mongolian Embassy here that visas for you and Mrs Rees have been authorised. The Embassy would be grateful if your passport could be sent to them as soon as possible. I have also telegraphed to Mr Colvin in order that he may approach the MFA about the trip to the Altai and the call on Rinchin. I have told him that you are now asking Aeroflot to reserve a seat on the flight which leaves Ulan Bator on 22 September.
I hope that there will be no difficulty about your request to spend three days in the Altai. It should certainly be a rewarding journey. But Mr Colvin has asked me to warn you that the weather in Mongolia in mid-September can be unpredictable. it were bad Western Mongolia might be inaccessible.

Miss Kelly wrote to you on 7 August to say that the Acting Governor of Hong Kong would be pleased if you would have lunch at Government House on Thursday 6 September, and that Dick Stratton, his political adviser, would be glad if you would dine with him on Wednesday 5 September. I mentioned on the telephone on 16 August that we had accepted both invitations on your behalf.
