Biography:
Kenneth CLARKE, M.P. (Rushcliffe)
Kenneth Clarke was born in 1940.
He was educated at Nottingham High School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.
He is married, with two children.
He is a barrister-at-law, having been called to the Bar by Grays Inn in 1963. Since then, he has practised on the Midland Circuit, based in Birmingham, where he now lives.
He first became active in politics at Cambridge where he was President of the Union, and Chairman of the University Conservative Association. He was also the National Chairman of the Federation of University Conservative Associations, and has served on many of the National Committees of the Party.
He is an active member of the Bow Group and is the joint author of a number of pamphlets.
He unsuccessfully contested Mansfield in the General Election of 1964 and 1966. He was elected M.P. for Rushcliffe at the 1970 General Election, gaining the seat from Labour.
His specialised political interests are the
Social Services, Education and Britain's relations with Europe.
From January 1971 April 1972 he was P.P.3. to the Solicitor- General and worked with Sir Geoffrey Howe, first on the Industrial Relations Bill and then on the European Community Enabling Legislation.
He was appointed an Assistant Government Whip in April 1972.
