POLICE CHIEF DENIES

HIGH LIVING

POLICE Superintendent

Ernest Percival Hunt, head of Hongkong's murder squad, denied in court yes- terday that he maintained a standard of living in excess of his legitimate income.

Hunt, who is charged under Hongkong's new anti-bribery 'laws, was alleged to have spent £13,000 between May 14, 1971, and Feb. 14 this year. Accord- ing to Mr Ross RENWINGTON, the prosecutor his total salary and allowances for that period amounted to £11,800.

Mr Pentington pointed out, however that Hunt's wife had earned about £6,000 during the same period.

Private apartment Outlining

the case against Hunt, formerly of Glamorgan police, Mr Penlington said he moved from

a Government-

designated hotel to more expen- sive hotel accommodation, pay- ing out of his own pocket about £400.

Later he rented a private apartment which cost him about £100 a month above the allow- ance provided by the Govern- ment.

Hunt was also alleged to have spent more than £1,100 on furni- ture and household appliances, some of which could have been provided free by the Govern- ment.

Mr Penlington said he kept two servants at £75 a month and spent about £3,600 on repairs and maintenance for his three cars a Volkswagen, a Mark Ten Jaguar and an E-type Jaguar.

. Hunt's wife was paid £100 a month by bank standing order, which was increased to £200 when he went on leave.

"Two sons, said Mr Penlington, were in England-one at a pri- ..vate preparatory school, the other at a public school, while his daughter was at a finishing school in Switzerland.

The prosecutor said the total figure for expenditure did not Include the children's education and boarding expenses or Hunt's household bills.

The case continues today.

A Labour MP yesterday claimed there was growing anti-British feeling' in Hong- kong over the case of a former police chief alleged to have amassed an unexplained £330,000 while serving in the colony.

Mr Tom Pendry, MP for Staly. bridge and Hyde, who recently visited Hongkong, is now seek- ing a meeting with Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Foreign Secre- tary, about the case of Chief Supt Peter Godber, 51, now 'living at Rye, Sussex.

Mr Pendry said: "The lack of public confidence in the Hong- kong police is evident to all in the colony, and unless confidencz is restored quickly, Britain wiii be held responsible by many for anv breakdown in law order."
