In your letter of 21 February you confirmed that

Her Majesty w be ready to consider a new

candidate for the appointment of Chief Justice

of Hong Kong.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary now wishes

to recommend for Her Majesty's approval the name

of Mr Justice Geoffrey Gould Briggs for appointment

as Chief Justice in succession to Sir Ivo Rigby,

who, as you know, retires in May this year. This

recommendation is supported by the Governor of

Hong Kong.

I enclose a note on Mr Justice Briggs' career. I

also enclose Sir Alec Douglas-Home's formal

submission to Her Majesty in the event of this

recommendation being acceptable,
