IMMIGRATION ORDINANCE 1971 COMES INTO EFFECT
On Saturday, April 1
*****
April 1, 1972 has been appointed by the Governor as the date
on which the Immigration Ordinance 1971 will come into operation.
This was announced by Mr. W.E. Collard, Director of Immigration
at a press conference this (Thursday) afternoon.
The Ordinance, which was passed in Legislative Council on October 13,
last year, gives the right to enter Hong Kong to both Chinese residents
and persons of United Kingdom origin who have lived at any time in Hong
Kong for a continuous period of at least seven years.
A person
who is born, naturalised, adopted or registered in the
United Kingdom and the wife or child of such a person will be known as
United Kingdom belongers. Such persons will have a legal right to enter
Hong Kong only if they have been ordinarily resident here for a continuous
period of at least seven years. They are then known as resident United
Kingdom belongers.
British subjects, other than Hong Kong belongers and United Kingdom
belongers, are treated in the same manner as aliens.
Notices giving details of the new immigration controls will be
published in both English and Chinese newspapers tomorrow (Friday) for the
information of the general public.
