1. It is now essential that a letter similar to the attached specimens should be issued to all passport holders who are appointed to the British Trade Commission or any of the organisations in Hong Kong which are administered by the British Trade Commission.

2.

In accordance with the new immigration regulations holders of British Passports will only be permitted to stay in Hong Kong for six months and the passport will be endorsed accordingly, unless the attached letter is shown and carried with the passport. In the latter circumstances the passport is endorsed "Landed" and the period of the stopover is unlimited. But in the former instance the holder must present his or her passport to the Immigration Department before the expiration of the six month period and must pay HK 30 for a further period of six months.

3. Currently two arrivals into Hong Kong recently without the letter received the "Limited" stamp whereas the Senior Trade Commissioner and Mrs Aston who arrived on 8 July had their passports endorsed "Landed". In this case I was able to include the letters with the passports before they reached immigration.

Lice Once the "Limited" endorsement has been entered in the passport, it is not possible to get it cancelled, unless the holder leaves Hong Kong before the expiration of the six month period and presents my letter on return when a "Landed" endorsement will replace the "Limited".

5. It is important that all new arrivals state exactly the actual period they expect to stay in Hong Kong.

6.

Instead of the letter perhaps a "stamp" endorsing the passport would be as offective.

7. Authority is requested to refund the 30 to all those persons already in liong Kong who will have to pay this sum when they present their passports for extension of the limited period. It is hoped that the letter quoted will be accepted for a "Landed" endorsement in these cases also.

8.
