PRESS RELEASE

REGISTRY Nr.51

HILK 18

Friday, 3rd March, 1972.

13,000 ALREADY RE-REGISTERED AS URBCO ELECTORS

*****

A total of 13,000 people have so far re-registered as Urban

Council electors.

This amounts to more than a third of the 37,788 people on the

current electoral roll who have been sent forms by registered post to

enable them to re-register as voters.

The re-registration of electors is carried out at least once

every six years to ensure that the electoral roll is kept up to date.

The second Sexennial Inquiry, which is now taking place, began two

weeks ago when notices were sent out to electors on the current register.

The number of returns received so far shows a big improvement

compared with the first Sexennial Inquiry in 1966.

At that time the number of people who were re-registered

during the first two weeks totalled only 4,700, out of a figure of

29,529 on the electoral roll who had been sent the statutory notices of

sexennial inquiry.

A spokesman for the Registration of Persons Department

today urged people who had not yet-registered to do so as soon as

possible.
