cultural presentations at low admission prices. These performances

include eastern and western music, ballet, drama and hi-fi concerts.

In 1971, there were about 150 performances with a total

attendance of over 150,000 people.

Presentations by overseas artists are arranged with the

local branches of international cultural agencies, such as the Goethe

Institute, the Alliance Francaise and the British Council.

The City Museum and Art Gallery is situated on the top three

floors of the City Hall high block. There is also a branch museum at

Lei Cheng Uk where a Han Tomb discovered in 1955 is preserved in its

original setting.

The museum collections include some ..1,000 items of Chinese

art and antiquities, comprising ceramics, bronze, jade, paintings,

textiles and paper cuts. The collection of historical pictures is made

up of some 600 paintings, watercolours and drawings.

Since opening in March 1962, the museum and art gallery

have staged 113 different displays and exhibitions, including the Henry

Moore sculptures, paintings of the Ming and Ching periods and a

pictorial hisotyr of Hong Kong in the last century.

The total attendance at the City Museum and Art Gallery was

261,342 in 1971.

Public libraries are also one of the cultural facilities

provided by the Urban Council. These are: the City Hall Library,

the Aberdeen-Pokfulam Branch Library, the Waterloo Road Branch Library

and the Yau Ma Tei Branch Library. A fifth library is scheduled to
