We are co tent with the amendments you propose to the draft letter to the Treasury, subject to the following points:

Prik

516

(a)

Omission of the word 'clearly' in the first sentence of paragraph 5;

(b)

(c)

Reinsertion of the statement that the terms of the letter have been agreed between you and us;

Deletion of the words 'between us' at the end of the first sentence of the new paragraph 13.

Paragraph 13 would then read:

3.

"We really must reach a conclusion about these long outstanding claims, which are beginning to attract the attention of the Exchequer and Audit Department and since the FCO and we are unable to reach agreement, we should be glad if you would adjudicate. Le and the FCO (with whom the terms of this letter have been agreed) are, of course, ready to discuss the matter with you if you think this will help.

Incidentally, Brack is no longer on the MOD desk in the Treasury and the letter, when it issues, should be sent to his successor who is I believe, called Scholar (spelling uncertain). Our copy should be addressed to Miss P Kelly, Hong Kong and Indian ücean Department.
